Meet Mary

Mary's Journey

The Congresswoman For Us.

Mary Waters, building on a work ethic honed by working the cotton fields of Alabama in grade school; Mary Waters attended Detroit Northern High & Sherrard Junior High Schools and earned an accounting certification from the Detroit Business Institute prior to graduating from the University of Michigan with a B.A. Degree.

Waters is Past President of Sisters Network Greater Metropolitan Detroit (Black Breast Cancer Survivors). Mary continues to volunteer with Sisters Network to help younger & older women deal with the health care disparities of that devastating disease.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, Waters was the first Black woman to serve as Democratic Floor Leader when Waters served in the Michigan House of Representatives where Waters had a perfect attendance record garnering millions of dollars for Detroit and Wayne County.

All three terms that Waters served as a State Representative were served with (now) Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Waters was Whitmer’s Floor Leader.

A Breast Cancer Survivor that has completed 10 Mile races; as a member of the National Action Network, Waters has never backed down from direct action such as blocking trucks delivering toxic pet coke on the Detroit River.

While employed at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Waters was an original organizer of UAW Local 2500.

Mary has served students as a teacher and a member of American Federation of Teachers & Detroit Federation of Teachers unions.

Councilwoman Waters’ priorities have included tackling issues confronting Seniors, Veterans, single mothers and families including public safety, affordable housing, fighting water shutoffs, poverty, literacy challenges, foreclosure prevention and inadequate health systems while growing entrepreneurial opportunities with fair contracting reflecting the demographics of Detroit.

Mary Waters represents more Black voters than any other Black woman in Michigan holding a municipal office with budgetary oversight because Waters is one of only two council members that represents the entire City of Detroit beyond a district.
